What is Barra Engine?

The Barra engine is an inline 6-cylinder engine used by Ford Australia from 2002 to 2016. The Ford Barra engine was designed and manufactured in Geelong, Victoria, and it is exclusive to Australia’s Falcon and Territory. Barra is a short term of Barramundi.

Firstly, this type of engine was launched in BA Falcon and was named after the “Barramundi” code, which was depleted during the designing of BA’s upgrade engine.

Production of the V8 engine from Ontario, Essex, was ceased on the FG model, but the I6 engine sustained to be produced through September 26, 2016. This coincided with the discontinuation of production of Falcon and Territory on October 7th.

Why do Australians love the Ford Barra Engine so much?

 The “Barra engine” was produced exclusively in Australia between 2002 to 2016. It was an inline 6-cylinder engine manufactured by Ford Australia, but some 3-valve V8s were also called Barra. These types of engines were initially developed for the Ford Falcon, a Mondeo-Esque saloon that later became a real Australian legend.

Inline 6-cylinder Barra engine is an improvement of a single 6-cylinder inline camshaft with a separate camshaft and variable valve timing in the 1980s to meet the technical trends of the time.

The VVT ​​system in this engine is more powerful than previous Falcon engines, with the minimum power rating for DOHC is approximately 210 brake horsepower.

The output power comes from the Barra 182, a 4.0 liter inline 6-cylinder engine with 4 valves per cylinder, cable drive, Ford Custom Variable Cam Timing (VCT), aluminium cylinder head, and a cast-iron block. These advancements to the older Ford Intec engine also allow all cars using Barra to outperform their main competitors.

The most important of these are the Houghton Commodores with little equipment.

Barra’s top model is the turbocharged 325TFGX Sprint. It has a remarkable output of 420 brake horsepower, the engine positioned in the Falcon FGX XR6 Turbo Sprint. Thanks to the 10-second over-boost system, the engine reaches 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds.

The chief attraction of these engines is torque. This is because the Barra can get an excellent, tenacious force out of the low RPM range.

On most Barra engines, the torque data actually exceeds the power data, and the turbo version can produce up to 425 lb-ft of torque at just 2750 rpm.

These engines are very famous because an inline 6-cylinder is essentially a balanced engine. The piston moves synchronously with the mirror image on the other side of the cylinder. In other words, the lifting force is balanced without a balance shaft or counterweight.

Barra engine also has an excellent base. Many people charge their NA devices with a turbocharger or simply replace the original turbocharger with a thicker one.

However, the most important points to consider are the connecting rods and valve springs. This is because adjusting the engine for the correct form of stress is usually done first.

What makes the Barra Engine so great?

Barra engine is a very famous engine in Australia. Hilzinger explains, “The durability of the engine is a good candidate for high performance, especially when you include momentum in the equation.” “Latest versions of these engines are best for major turbo upgrades.

With basic support module, it can run up to 600 on the rear tires on a stock bottom end.” This number is achieved by Mighty Car Mod’s Toyota Cresta project, 9.90 seconds generating 1/4 mile. 

Also, due to its more significant displacement and lower box design, the engine has a very useful band of power that can produce significant torque.

1) Barra 182

Barra 182 engine was designed from 2002 to 2005. You can see this engine in the 6-cylinder variant of the SX Territory and BA Falcon (Fairmont and Fairlane derivative models).

It was the 1st Falcon’s engine that had Variable Cam Timing and DOHC standards. This led to a significant increase in performance of the 210hp SOHC Intech engine in the earlier produced Australian Falcon, 10 kW more than the 172kW of the Tickford Extended VCT motor.

In addition, Ford’s engine power is higher than that of the L67 supercharged V6, and Holden Ecotec discovered in Holden VY Commodore engines from Holden Ecotech.

2) Barra 190

Barra 190 was discovered in SY/SY II Territory and BF Falcon and designed from 2005-2008. This engine looks the same as the Barra182 and is very similar mechanically.

Barra 190

This engine has more compression ratios, secondary knock sensors, changes to the intake system, minor changes to the cam profile, two independent variable cam timing introductions, improved ECUs, which permitted high ignition and spark control.  With these changes, the output has increased slightly to 190 kW.

3) Barra 195

These Barra engines are the most modern type of inherently aspirated I6 engines used in SZ/SZII Territory and FG/FG-X Falcon.

This engine has few changes compared to Barra 190, like a new intake manifold and a new plastic throttle body (replaces the EF Falcon-derived intake manifold with broadband manifold) and a redesigned “Quick Burn” cylinder head.

These improvements in the Barra 195 have increased the Barra 190 engine’s performance and economy. It was also stimulated to a rear sump structure to accommodate the new FG Falcon front subframe.

4) Barra 240T

You can find Barra 240T in the BA Falcon XR6 Turbo. This engine was manufactured from 2002 to 2005.

These engines are very identical to the naturally aspirated Barra 182 engines. The difference between them is that Barra 240T has many pistons to decrease the compression ratio, an intercooler, red rocker cover, an Inconel exhaust valve, higher base fuel pressure, and a single Garrett GT35/82r turbocharger.

5) Barra 245T

You can find Barra 245T in the SY Territory Turbo and BF Falcon XR6 Turbo. This engine was designed from mid-2005 to early 2008. Internally this engine is very identical to its predecessor, but with the variations familiarized by the Barra 190, we see an increase in power of 5 kW.

From the outside, the engine model is very similar to the old model, but the Territory Turbo uses a top-mounted intercooler and a black rocker arm cover.

This type of engine has a high-performance variant of the Barra 240/245T version of the XR6 Turbo. This engine is different than the standard turbo engine because of the unique blue FPV rocker arm cover.

The power of this engine can rise by utilizing the boost pressure from the otherwise large Garrett GT3540 turbocharger, a large intercooler, and improved air intake.

7) Barra 270T (FG)

This engine was manufactured from mid-2008 to the end of 2016. You can find Barra 270T (FG) engine in the FG/FG-X Falcon XR6 Turbo. The changed turbo engine performance data represents the previous turbo FPV I6, but this engine is a little bit different.

It features a redesigned sleek trunk-style intake manifold, a new intercooler, a redesigned piston for more compression, and a smaller turbocharger that spins faster. This makes the FG XR6 Turbo quicker compared to the FPV’s BF Typhoon, even though they deliver the same amount of power. As the best atmospheric conditions are reached with the throttle fully open, the engine introduces a temporary over-boost function for up to 10 seconds and rises the torque up to 586 Nm.

8) Barra 310T Engine

Barra 310T is built on the base of FPV F6. You can find this engine in FG Falcon.  This is a powerful alternative to the FG XR6 Turbo Barra 270T. Barra 310T was designed from mid-2008 to mid-2014 and ended with the end of FPV.

This engine has many features such as use multiple pistons for decreasing the compression, a large intercooler and turbocharger, and large injectors. Firstly, Barra 310T was made in Australia. This was the 1st engine of Australia which could produce more than 100 horsepower/liter.
